Marija Gimbutas' pioneering research on the Godderss Civilization of Old Europe.

  • Joan Marler

This brief presentation is an introduction to the remarkable life and work of the Lithuanian-American archaeomythologist Marija Gimbutas who was born and raised in Lithuania, the last European country to be Christianized. We will focus on her pioneering interpretation of Old Europe as a Goddess Civilization with its abundance of sacred symbolism and female imagery within ritual contexts that were central to peoples lifeways within the sacred context of the living world. In The Civilization of the Goddess (1991) Marija writes: “Knowing the sacred earth as Mother, pregnant in spring, ripening into the birth of harvest, her fruited vines cut like umbilical cords and celebrated in autumn are beliefs that are thousands of years old.”
